I am not a member of DSS Brighton & Hove, can I still come?
In our playgroup, everyone is welcome, whether a member or not – from baby. Preschool children can also take part as a drop-in in the intermediate group. However, the children must be registered for lessons and families must be part of it as a member. We only have very limited places. Our classes are very popular and are awarded on First Come First Serve base. Waiting lists are offered for all classes.
Membership must be renewed annually and costs £25 per family per year.
Why is school fees required at the beginning of the term? Can’t I pay weekly through direct debit?
We are obliged to book the Elmgrove School and our teachers at the beginning of the term and therefore to pay. Unfortunately, we cannot accept direct debits, weekly or monthly payments to ensure that we have enough money in the cash register to finance the DSS Brighton & Hove. If this is difficult for you, please contact us and we will see what we can do on an individual basis.
Can I work on the committee? Or, I don’t have that much time, but I’d love to help, can I do it every now and then?
Our school is exclusively supported by a volunteer team of mostly working parents, so we are grateful for any help – no matter how much time everyone has. Our committee is elected to AGM once a year. Please contact us for more information. But we always have items for helpers for our various annual festivals. In addition, parents’ helpers are always welcome for Saturdays and are always needed.
Why does my child have to be able to speak German in order to be able to go to the German Saturday School?
We are not a language school, but want to try to support German-speaking children who grow up in England in their bilingual life with our lessons. The everyday use of German at home is therefore important in order to create the necessary suspensions for the child and to deepen what they have learned.
I’m new to Brighton & Hove or surroundings and would be very interested in a place for my child in the DSS.

Incidentally, we also offer free trial lessons so that families can get to know our Saturday school and offer first.
I have children in the German Saturday School, what kind of material do I have to send to school?
There is not much to bring in terms of material, as most of the school is provided. However, we ask that every student bring the sponsored red DSSBH backpack (marked with name or emblem) with them. This must include: Distributed booklets/folders, borrowed books & a dense drinking water bottle.
Why is so much value on punctuality?
The lesson time at the DSSBH is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Please come and pick up on time, as the school is only available to us for a limited time and has to be handed over to us.

All things of this kind must not be taken to the classroom. They can be left in the entrance area (even after the break). To rule out confusion, please label everything!
How is the library of the German Saturday School going?
We have a well-stocked library of reading books that the students can borrow. Reading offers a wonderful opportunity not only to experience exciting adventures with the hero of history, but also to train vocabulary and syntax. The library rules are discussed and distributed in the classes on Saturdays.
